New Delhi: In a significant boost to international education in India, the University of Liverpool is set to open its first Indian campus in Bengaluru during the current academic year. The move is part of a broader initiative under India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes a “rooted, futuristic, and global education” to nurture global citizens.
The announcement was made by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also stated that 15 foreign universities are expected to be opening campuses in India in the current year with a keen focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines.
The University of Liverpool becomes the second foreign university to have received a Letter of Intent (LoI) under the UCG Regulations. This follows the University of Southampton, which is expected to set up a campus in Gurugram later this calendar year. Such developments mark a landmark change in the higher education landscape of India by welcoming globally acclaimed institutions into the domestic ecosystem.
Earlier, Australia’s Deakin University had opened the first independent campus in GIFT City, Gujarat, under IFSCA regulations that are tailor-made for financial hub operations. Last November, another Australian institute, the University of Wollongong, opened its campus in the same city.
The thrust of this initiative will be to enhance the education standard in India, promote international cooperation opportunities, and provide Indian students access to world-class academic resources while remaining at home.
